Saudi Arabia’s air defense systems successfully intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by Houthi forces south of Mecca on September 15, according to a statement from the Saudi-led coalition. The drone was reportedly headed towards the restricted airspace over the holy city, marking the second known attempt by the Houthis to target Mecca, the first being a ballistic missile incident in 2017.
Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki emphasized the inviolability of the two holy mosques and the safety of pilgrims, declaring that these are “red lines” for Saudi Arabia. He warned of necessary measures to prevent future attacks by the Houthis, a group engaged in ongoing conflict with Saudi Arabia in the region.
The Houthis, however, denied any intent to target Mecca. Their spokesperson, Hazem al-Assad, dismissed the coalition’s claim, asserting that their forces had not aimed at the holy city. Such denials have been characteristic of the complex narratives surrounding the conflict.
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned the attempted attack and reiterated its support for the protection of Mecca, Medina, and other sacred Islamic sites. The OIC’s stance aligns with broader concerns about the security of these locations amid a series of increased Houthi actions and heightened security alerts across Saudi Arabia.
