Stock Pressure Hits SpaceX with 911.5 Million Shares Now Tradable

SpaceX is bracing for potential selling pressure as up to 911.5 million shares are poised to become eligible for trading. This development grants certain employees and early investors the chance to offload shares acquired prior to the company’s noteworthy IPO. On Wednesday, the stock experienced a significant downturn, plummeting nearly 14% to close at $108.27, marking its second-largest single-day drop and positioning shares approximately 20% below the $135 IPO price. This sharp decline follows just weeks after SpaceX’s entry into the public market.

Initially, SpaceX offered a limited portion of its shares for public trading, resulting in a constrained supply that fueled strong demand post-IPO. The upcoming release of additional shares is set to substantially increase availability to investors, potentially introducing short-term volatility. However, not all of the 911.5 million shares will necessarily be sold immediately. Employees and early investors have the option to either retain their holdings or sell them. For those who acquired shares at significantly lower valuations before the IPO, there may be a strong incentive to cash in on profits.

Instead of relying on a singular traditional lock-up period, SpaceX has implemented a staggered schedule for releasing restricted shares. This strategy includes additional releases later in the year, which could result in billions more Class A shares becoming available for trading. Meanwhile, Elon Musk and other senior executives face a longer restriction period, with their shares remaining locked up for a more extended duration compared to those included in the latest release. Given that Musk’s holdings constitute a considerable portion of SpaceX’s total value, future executive share unlocks will be a key point of interest for investors.

The increase in publicly traded shares could also influence SpaceX’s weighting in the Nasdaq-100 index. Presently, its weighting hovers around 1% but has the potential to exceed 3.5%, contingent upon the stock price and the number of shares available during the next index adjustment. Although the share unlock may introduce short-term selling pressure, it does not directly impact SpaceX’s core business operations. Investors are expected to maintain their focus on the company’s financial performance, growth prospects, artificial intelligence investments, and execution of its long-term strategies.
