Saudi Arabia and Senegal have called for enhanced international cooperation to tackle escalating global water challenges, emphasizing issues like water scarcity, rising demand, and limited access to safe water. This appeal was made during a high-level event at the United Nations General Assembly, where Saudi Deputy Minister for International Multilateral Affairs Abdulrahman Al-Rassi stressed the critical nature of water security in relation to international security, economic growth, and community resilience.
Al-Rassi highlighted that addressing the global water crisis requires more than just augmenting water availability. He pointed to the necessity for improved governance, technological advancements, accessibility, and international collaboration. He also noted Saudi Arabia’s proactive measures in managing water scarcity through desalination, technological investments, and the implementation of its National Water Strategy 2030.
Senegal echoed the call for prioritizing water in global policy discussions, particularly as water issues increasingly intersect with climate change, economic development, and social stability. The discussions underscored the importance of cooperation over shared water resources, with Senegal citing transboundary water management as an effective model for countries to address mutual challenges.
Retno Marsudi, the UN’s special envoy on water, remarked on the slow progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal concerning water and sanitation. She highlighted the ongoing global issue where millions still lack access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation, reinforcing the need for stronger collective actions.
In a bid to further the conversation on water security, Saudi Arabia is set to host the 11th World Water Forum in March 2027. Meanwhile, Senegal and the United Arab Emirates are slated to co-host the 2026 UN Water Conference in Abu Dhabi, aiming to continue fostering international dialogue and cooperation on this pressing issue.
