Saudi Arabia and Greece Enhance Energy and Security Cooperation with New Agreements

Saudi Arabia and Greece have agreed to bolster their cooperation in key areas such as energy, investment, and security following talks between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Riyadh. This meeting, which celebrated a century of diplomatic relations between the two nations, underscored the importance of safeguarding international shipping lanes and ensuring the stability of energy supplies.

In a joint statement, the leaders highlighted their concerns over potential threats to energy infrastructure and their implications for global markets and economic stability. Greece acknowledged Saudi Arabia’s efforts to maintain steady oil supplies through alternative export routes, particularly the East-West Pipeline.

A significant focus of the discussions was on energy cooperation, with both countries committing to expedite the development of an electricity interconnection project aimed at linking Saudi Arabia with Europe via Greece. They also explored avenues for exporting clean hydrogen from Saudi Arabia to Greece and other EU markets, while fostering investments in renewable energy, conventional energy, and petrochemicals.

The talks also aimed at expanding economic ties, particularly in infrastructure, construction, logistics, and technology. Bilateral trade between the two nations reached an estimated $1.7 billion in 2025, reflecting their growing commercial relationship. Digital connectivity was a priority as well, with progress noted on the EMC submarine cable project, which aims to enhance communication infrastructure between East and West. Both sides committed to ensuring the project’s timely completion.

Saudi Arabia invited Greek companies to invest in its economy and participate in major initiatives like Riyadh Expo 2030 and the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Conversely, Greece encouraged Saudi investors to explore opportunities in its transport, energy, logistics, digital infrastructure, and advanced technologies sectors.

Additionally, the leaders agreed to strengthen their defence and security cooperation, focusing on counterterrorism, combating terrorist financing, cybersecurity, and intelligence sharing. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to international climate agreements and expressed support for collaboration in carbon management, artificial intelligence, space technology, healthcare, education, tourism, and culture.

The discussions, which build on the strategic partnership established in 2022, reflect the growing importance of Saudi-Greek relations in enhancing energy security, facilitating international trade, and improving regional connectivity.
