Italy Urges Diplomacy After Condemning Houthi Attacks on Saudi Arabia

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has strongly condemned the recent attacks by Houthi rebels on Saudi Arabia, expressing Italy’s solidarity with the Kingdom. During a telephone conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Tajani reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to protecting civilians and infrastructure in the region. He extended his gratitude to Saudi authorities for ensuring the safety of Italian citizens residing in the country.

Tajani emphasized the importance of a diplomatic solution to the Yemen crisis, highlighting Italy’s support for United Nations efforts aimed at achieving peace. The discussion between the two ministers also covered maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. They highlighted the significance of maintaining freedom of navigation, protecting commercial shipping routes, and enhancing security across the Gulf region.

Further, Tajani underscored the importance of reinforcing the European Union’s Operation Aspides, a naval mission launched in February 2024, designed to safeguard shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. This operation is part of broader efforts to ensure maritime security in these vital waterways.

In response to the Houthi attacks, Saudi Arabia’s Cabinet has issued a warning to the rebels about potential consequences for their continued aggression. The Cabinet also reiterated the need to protect navigation through the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait. Additionally, it praised the international Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen for its actions against the Houthi group.
